Firmware updates and release notes

Faikin Australia

How to update the firmware on your Faikin module, and what has changed in each release.

If you arrived here from the firmware update notice in Home Assistant, you are in the right place. Home Assistant links to this page as the release notes for Sora, Ninja, Oyu and Faiktron modules.

Update a Sora, Ninja, Oyu or Faiktron module

These modules do not update themselves. They check for new firmware every few days and tell you when one is available, but you start the update.

  1. On a phone or computer connected to the same network as the module, open the module's web page. Browse to faikinac-xxxx.local, where xxxx is the last four characters of the module's MAC address, or browse to the module's IP address from your router's device list.
  2. Open the Firmware Upgrade menu and start the upgrade. The module needs internet access to download the new firmware.
  3. Wait a minute or two. The module downloads the firmware, restarts and comes back on its own. Do not turn the air conditioner off at the isolator while this is happening.
  4. Check the version shown on the web page. If you were on a much older version and it has not changed, run the upgrade a second time.

From version 3.9.2, an update can no longer leave the module unusable. If new firmware fails to start, or the module restarts within about 30 seconds of an update, it goes back to the previous firmware by itself. If it crashes repeatedly it starts in Safe mode, where the web page still works so you can run the upgrade again.

If the upgrade stops with an OTA failed message, the module ran short of memory while downloading the new firmware. A weak WiFi signal makes this more likely. Turn on Safe mode in the module's web UI, run the upgrade again, then turn Safe mode off.

If you are on a version older than 3.9.2 and the upgrade will not complete, contact us and we will help you get it across.

The Home Assistant update notice

Only Sora, Ninja, Oyu and Faiktron modules show this notice. Faikout modules do not.

If one of these modules is connected to Home Assistant over MQTT, it appears with a Firmware update entity. When new firmware is available, Home Assistant shows an update notice:

  • Install sends the same upgrade command as the module's web UI. If nothing happens, use the module's web UI as described above.
  • The release notes link opens this page.

On test builds, Home Assistant can show a latest version lower than the installed version. That is expected. Don't upgrade firmware on test builds unless instructed to do so!

Update a Faikout module

Faikout modules run RevK's open-source firmware, which works differently from the modules above.

  • Faikout firmware updates itself automatically, about once a week, when a new release is available. You can change this in the module's settings.
  • To update straight away, open the module's web page, go to WiFi settings and click Upgrade. The module needs internet access, and it restarts on its own when the update finishes.
  • Fixes are often released to beta first. The firmware update section of the module's web page has a switch between release and beta builds. Switch to beta to pick up a fix early, and back to release once it has been released.

The firmware source code, manuals and issue tracker are on Codeberg: codeberg.org/RevK/ESP32-Faikout. Changes in progress are listed on the Work in progress page. Our setup guide is here.
