Ducted model number guide

To pick the right Faikin cable you need the model number of your indoor unit. With a ducted system the indoor unit is hidden away, usually in the ceiling space, so finding that number takes a little more effort than with a wall-mounted split. This page explains what the parts of a ducted system are and where the model number lives.

The parts of a ducted system

A ducted system has three components you can see or reach, plus the ducting that connects them.

  • Indoor unit: a large metal box concealed in the ceiling space, under the floor or in a basement. It contains the fan, the heat exchanger and the control board the Faikin connects to. This is the unit whose model number you need.
  • Outdoor unit: the compressor unit outside the house. Its model number usually starts with R and is not the one you need, though it helps us narrow things down if the indoor unit is out of reach.
  • Wall controller: the control panel in a hallway or living area. Its model number (usually BRC followed by digits) identifies the controller, not the air conditioner. Customers often send us this one by mistake.
  • Ducting and outlets: flexible ducts run from the indoor unit to outlets in each room, with a return air grille bringing air back. Zoned systems add motorised dampers in the ducting.

Where the indoor unit is

The indoor unit follows the ducts. If your air outlets are in the ceiling, look up. If they are in the floor, look down. Houses on a concrete slab almost always have the unit in the ceiling space. Houses with timber floors or on stumps may have it under the floor. In countries where basements are common, check the basement. In a multi-storey home it can also sit in the void between floors.

Where the model number is

The model number is printed on the data plate, a sticker on the outside of the indoor unit casing, usually on or beside the electrical box cover. You do not need to open anything or remove any covers to read it.

Daikin ducted indoor model numbers start with F, for example FDYAN125AV1, FDYQ100LBV1 or FXDQ25A2VEB.

To find it:

  1. Find your access point (usually a manhole in a hallway or wardrobe ceiling, or an under-floor access hatch) and locate the indoor unit. It will be near the return air grille.
  2. Take a torch and photograph every label you can see on the unit. Photos are easier than copying numbers down in a dark roof space.
  3. Read the model number from the data plate. It is the field labelled Model or Model name.

Apartment systems often use a slimline bulkhead unit (FXDQ and similar) mounted behind an access panel rather than in a roof space. The data plate is on the side of the unit.

Can't reach the unit?

You can usually find the indoor model number without climbing into the roof:

  • Check the rating plate on the outdoor unit. On many Daikin ducted systems it lists two model numbers, and the second one, starting with F, is the indoor model.
  • The installation quote, invoice or warranty paperwork normally lists both indoor and outdoor models.
  • If the system was registered for warranty with Daikin, the confirmation email lists the models.
  • Your installer will have it on record.
  • Failing that, send us a photo of the outdoor unit data plate and the wall controller, and we will identify the indoor unit from there.

Common mix-ups

  • The wall controller model (BRC...) is not the indoor unit model.
  • The outdoor unit model (R...) is not the indoor unit model either, though it is useful supporting information.
  • Ducted systems often have more than one circuit board, especially with zoning. That matters when installing the Faikin, not when reading the model number, which is always on the outside of the unit.

Next step

Once you have the model number, look it up in the compatibility and cable selection database to find the cable type for your unit. If your model is not listed, contact us with the model number and we will check it for you.
